Every WIAN cable is the same copper and pairs inside; what changes between an indoor and an outdoor part code is the jacket. The jacket is what the sun, the water and the fire officer see, so it is worth knowing what each one does.
LSZH — low smoke, zero halogen
For offices, hospitals, data rooms, schools and any enclosed space where people would have to escape through smoke. In a fire an LSZH jacket produces little smoke and no acidic halogen gas. Neo WC-2212G and Spark WC-1212G carry an LSZH jacket. If a consultant’s specification says LSZH, it is not negotiable.
FR-PVC — flame-retardant PVC
The everyday indoor jacket: resists spreading a flame along the cable, flexible, easy to strip, and economical. Gold Series indoor WC-2217G and WC-2117G use FR-PVC. Suitable for most commercial and residential indoor work unless the specification calls for LSZH.
LDPE — the outdoor jacket
Polyethylene is what survives outdoors: UV-stable, water-resistant and tough. Spark outdoor WC-1213K uses a single LDPE jacket. Neo WC-2268K and Gold WC-2264K use a double LDPE jacket for compounds, pole runs and buried conduit. Every WIAN outdoor cable — Spark, Neo and Gold — also carries an anti-rodent and anti-termite coating, which matters more in India than any datasheet value.
The rule
Indoors, enclosed: LSZH. Indoors, general: FR-PVC. Any part of the run outside the building — even two metres across a terrace — LDPE for the whole run, because a jacket that is wrong for 2 m fails in 2 m. Never use an indoor LSZH cable outdoors; it absorbs water, goes brittle in the sun and the pairs corrode from the end.
What about armour?
Where the cable is buried directly, crosses a road, or shares a trench with rodents, the LDPE jacket needs armour over it. That is the next post.
